Finally got a good night’s sleep and then flew out of Dublin in the early afternoon. Took a turbo-prop to Edinburgh. Weather is great here, too, although somewhat chillier in the evening. Again, taxi driver was almost impossible to understand — huge Scots accent. We checked into the Premier Inn, right in the middle of the Royal Mile in town. The Royal Mile leads from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, the official residence in Edinburgh for Queen Elizabeth, and the home of Scottish royal history.
We walked partway up the Royal Mile toward the castle (very steep hill) and ate at a pub for dinner while we watched a World Cup game on TV. Everyone here (and in Ireland) is tremendously into the World Cup — lots of shouting and table banging. Pat tried a flight of whiskeys. One smelled like peat, and I thought it was disgusting. The old part of Edinburgh is huge and impressive. Can’t wait to see Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace tomorrow.
